Juliet and Jessica

There are some resemblance in Jessica, the daughter of Shylock, and Juliet.

The balcony scenes.

Juliet is on the balcony and is talked by Romeo underneath garden.

Jessica is on the balcony and is talked by Lorenzo underneath canal.
(Ghetto of Venice is secluded by walls and in 16th Century, the gate was locked during night, and no Christian could approach other than from the canal.)
Well, the girls have the same initial J on their names.

Juliet does not know Romeo is down there, but Jessica is actually waiting for Lorenzo.

Both girls cannot see the loved one’s face, for the boys are in the darkness of the night, and they can only guess by the voice.

Both girls brush on the scene; Juliet being heard what she has said, and Jessica disguising as a boy.

After the exchanges, Jessica escapes from the cage and go down to Lorenzo.

But Juliet stays in the cage, and Romeo comes up.
Although it is Juliet to offer marriage, she never leaves from the cage until it is too late.

Shakespeare provided similar scenes to Jessica and Juliet, and yet their actions are totally different.  Maybe this is the crossroad to either happy-ending or tragedy.
