  • あちこち走り回るって英語ではなんと言う？

    『ヴェニスの商人』シャイロックが逃亡した娘を探してヴェニス中を走り回っている間、ヴェニスの商人アントニオの友人たちは、破産した彼を探してヴェニス中を走り回っていました。

    あちこち探して走り回ることを日本語では、東奔西走、とか、あるいは闇雲に走り回る意味で、右往左往、と言いますね。

    英語ではなんと言っているでしょう？

    ↓

    「俺たちはアントニオを探してあちこち駆けずり回っていた」

    “We have been up and down to seek him.”

    ↑

    Up and down と言うのですね！

    日本語で、上と下という言葉を使うときは、上を下への大騒ぎ、の言い回しがありますね。

    In The Merchant of Venice, characters gossip and talks to each other with this phrase.

    “Now what news on the Rialto?”

    “How now, Shylock, what news among the merchants?”

  • 自分勝手な人のことを英語でなんと言う？

    『ヴェニスの商人』金の箱の格言について、いろいろお話しして来ましたが、そろそろ、先へ行きましょう。

    次は、２幕８場。

    シャイロックは娘がキリスト教徒と駆け落ちをしたと知って、パニックに陥っている、と街の人たちが噂をしています。

    同時に、ヴェニスの商人アントニオの船が沈んでしまったので、シャイロックに借りていた金を返せず、抵当を支払わなくてはいけないだろう、との噂も。

    その抵当とは、そう、アントニオの身体の肉を1ポンドいただく、というもの。

    金の代わりに、まさか身体の肉を切り取る？

    街の人は噂します。

    あいつならやりかねない、なにしろ

    ”I think he only loves the world for him.”

    「自分の世界しか愛していない男だよ、あいつは」

    金の箱の格言の意味を簡単に。
