The Merchant of Venice is a story around money lending.
Antonio the merchant of Venice talks to his best friend Bassanio what he wants to discuss today.
Bassanio starts saying,
’Tis not unknown to you, Antonio,
How much I have disabled mine estate,
Yes. He stars to tell his situation he is in now.

これをお読みの皆さんには関係のないことと願いますが、『ヴェニスの商人』は莫大な量の借金が絡む話です。
ヴェニスの商人アントニオが、親友のバッサニオに、今日はなんの話？と尋ねると、バッサニオは
’Tis not unknown to you, Antonio,
How much I have disabled mine estate,
「君も知らぬ話じゃないが、アントニオ、
俺は財産をすっかり食いつぶしてしまった」
と話し始めます。
’Tis は It is のこと。
Not unknown は二重否定で、「知らないことではない」＝「よく知っていること」
Estate は、貴族にとっての収入源となる領地で、それをdisabled 使えないものにしてしまった、という意味。
バッサニオはこれから借金を申し込むのですが、まずは現状説明から始めています。
これは借金に限らず、相手に何かお願い事があるとき、必要なこと。

前回のレッスンで取り上げたヴェニスの商人アントニオの「世界をありのままに見る」の台詞には続きがあります。
彼は世界をこのように見ているのです。
I hold the world but as the world a stage,
「俺は世界を舞台として見ている」
台詞はさらに続きます。
I hold the world but as the world a stage,
Where every man must play a part,
「その舞台では、誰もが一役演じなくちゃならん」
さらに次の台詞が続きます。
And mine a sad one.
「で、俺のは暗い役どころってわけだ」
戯曲の台詞は正確には、話しかけている友人の名前が間に入り込んだりして、文法がややひっくり返ったりしているのですが、意味はこのようなものです。
アントニオが暗い役どころ、と言ったのに対し、明るい友人は、「俺は道化がいいな」と返答します。

Antonio the merchant of Venice says he sees the world but as the world.
The line continues thus;
I hold the world but as the world, Gratiano, a stage where every man must play the part, and mine a sad one.
Antonio is fully aware that he sees the world with a sad eye.
His friend Gratiano answers,
“Let me play the fool, with mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come, and let my liver rather hear with wine than my heart cold with mortifying groans.”
Gratiano takes the part of a fool and enjoys his life with laughter and warm heart.
