The Merchant of Venice has been long thought to be a racial discriminating play.
Is it so?
Is Shakespeare a racist?
There is a scene we need to think about.
When Shylock knows all Antonio’s ships have been sunk, he says;
“Let him look to his bond.”
Salerio hears this and asks,
“ Why, I am sure if he forfeit thou wilt not take his flesh. What’s that good for?”
Shylock answers,
“To bait fish withal.”
Wow, that is a nasty answer.
