At First I Did Adore A Twinkling Star [Shakespeare For You]

🎭At first I did adore a twinkling star,
But now I worship a celestial sun.

    — Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-6

    [ACTING TIPS]

How would you compare one love to another?  Compare little twinkling star among other 1000000000 same kind of stars, and the one and only sun who governs the heaven.

Is it because of her money, high status, sophistication, humour, playfulness?  If you are to play either Julia or Silvia, think about it, too.

  • Kameido Shrine with Wisteria, and “Too Low A Mistress” [Shakespeare For You]

Kameido Shrine with Wisteria, and “Too Low A Mistress” [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 Sylvia:  Too low a mistress for so high a servant.
Proteus:  Not so, sweet lady, but too mean a servant
To have a look of such a worthy mistress.

    — Sylvia & Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-4

    [ACTING TIPS]

This is the first ever conversation between Sylvia and Proteus.  Sylvia, right after hearing what a splendid gentleman he is, from Valentine.  So she is very interested in him.  Her father says he is worth her husband, and she looks at him as a potential future husband.

On the other hand, Proteus has made a vow to his lady Julia in Verona.  He can be struck with Sylvia’s sophisticated manners and beauty, but he then more strongly tell himself that he would not be moved.  That makes the play more interesting.

  • If There Be No Great Love In The Beginning [Shakespeare For You]

If There Be No Great Love In The Beginning [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 If there be no great love in the beginning, yet heaven may decrease it upon better acquaintance, when we are married and have more occasion to know one another; I hope, upon familiarity will grow more contempt.

    — Slender, The Merry Wives of Windsor 1-1

    [ACTING TIPS]

Have a try to persuade someone that, even  without love,  marriage can be still a good thing.  But Slender misuse a word, when he has to use “increase”, but “decrease”.  What kind of person would do that?

  • Too Much Of A Good Thing [Shakespeare For You]

Too Much Of A Good Thing [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 Why then, can one desire too much of a good thing?

    — Rosalind, As You Like It 4-1

    [ACTING TIPS]

Rosalind, as a boy, wants her loved one to see an honest reality of a girl, for he (Orlando) idealises his love.  “Desire too much” leads to greed which is one of  the Seven Deadly Sins.  Let her play a playful wanton boy who allures an adult man into some mischiefs.  It’s important that in Shakespearean time, no woman wore trousers.  Rosalind must be feeling so free in her outfit now.
