    [ACTING TIPS]

    This monologue is a confession of

    1 what he has done
    2 what he is going to do
    3 what he is suffering.

    Shall I play this as a villain without no remorse for his betrayal of his friend?

    Or, rather as a kind of victim who feels as if he has been driven by some unnatural force, and doesn’t know what is going on?

    I may like to play the latter.  But I need to see the whole frame of the play, to decide which is more dramatically interesting whether he is bad or not so bad.

    [ACTING TIPS]

    Being vanished from the court of Duke of Milan, he was “stand-and-deliver”ed by a group of outlaws in the mountains, and asked if he had any resource.  And he answered this.

    “Fortune” could mean a big money, tremendous good luck, but here, he simply meant his downward, tragical, sad destiny.

    Everytime I come to this phrase, it reminds me of what Oscar Wilde answered at the US custom.

    USC:  Anything to declare?
    OW:  Nothing but my talent.

    [ACTING TIPS]

    I chose the phrase only because I just love the usage of the words such as “stand fast” and “passenger”.

    “Stand fast” means “get ready”.

    “Passenger” is a person passing by, thus a traveller.

    I love to find the origin of words.  They are so interesting!

    [ACTING TIPS]

    This scene is Act 3 Scene 2.  

    He just entered the scene, which means he didn’t hear the Duke saying “A little time will melt her frozen thoughts”.  But interesting enough, Proteus has the same kind of idea about time curing.  

    I think this shows the Duke and Proteus are the same kind of people.  So I would play this to come closer to Duke. 

    And if I were to play the Duke, with this phrase, I absolutely feel that we are on the same track.

    This scene is Act 3 Scene 2.  

    Milan is trying to soothe Sir Turio whom he thinks his daughter’s husband.

    A-little-time-will-sort-the-problem-out thinking reminds me of Lady Macbeth tells her husband “A little water clears us of this deed”.  And of rouse, it will not!

    I would say the line as casual as possible.

    Milan is trying to soothe Sir Turio whom he thinks his daughter’s husband.

    Ice and heat.  Very Shakespearean, isn’t it?

    I would make sure each image Milan speaks is as clear as possible.

    Proteus the traitor to his best friend sends him away with the mask of the best friend.  But the phrase itself is very nice and gives us strong hope.

    How shall I play this?

    Proteus is the name of an ancient Greek, or even pre-Greco God of ocean, and he has ability of shapeshifting. 

    Audience of the Renaissance time might be quite familiar with Greek mythology, for it was a fashionable thing, and immediately suspected in what different shape this Proteus the young Verona-man would take.

    Now he hides his betrayal and makes a good face toward the his best friend.

    I would play this phrase to Valentine as the best friend, so sincere, so understanding, so encouraging, and so full of love.

    The phrase “What light is light~” is used in the film Shakespeeare In Love.

    Valentine is orderd to leave Milan and not to see Silvia ever again.

    The banishment from love repeats in Romeo & Juliet.  Shakespeare must have been attracted by this theme so strongly.

    I would perform this just as simple and sincere as possible.
