  • I Hold Him But A Fool [Shakespeare For You]

I Hold Him But A Fool [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 I hold him but a fool that will endanger
His body for a girl that loves him not.

    — Turio, Two Gentlemen of Verona 5-4

    [ACTING TIPS]

Turio was just told from Valentine that if he were to claim Silvia, he would be seen as an enemy of Verona.

Thus he immediately changed his mind and said this.

He is a petty, trivial man, whom you may know so many of such kind near you.  You know how to play him.

We also know that he is not in love with Silvia any way, but with the future position of Duke of Milan, by marrying her.

  • That One Error Fills Him With Faults [Shakespeare For You]

That One Error Fills Him With Faults [Shakespeare For You]

    🎭 That one error
Fills him with faults; makes him run through all the sins.
    — Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 5-4

    [ACTING TIPS]

There is a Japanese proverb; Ichi-ji ga Ban-ji, meaning:  one thing leads to all.
    Proteus realizes the same.

To play the words, I would say Proteus must be filled with remorse.

I am not yet quite sure what, for Proteus, is the first “that one error”.

When I don’t yet know the answer, I try acting all the possibilities.

Was the first error to leave Verona?
    Or to obey his father?
Remember the first lines of Act 2, Scene 6, when he counterbalanced the weight of the sins he was about to commit.

“O sweet-suggesting Love, if thou hast sinned,
Teach me, thy tempted subject, to excuse it!”

  • Kameido Shrine with Wisteria, and With Good Grace To Grace A Gentleman [Shakespeare For You]

Kameido Shrine with Wisteria, and With Good Grace To Grace A Gentleman [Shakespeare For You]

    🎭 His years but young, but his experience old;
    His head and unmellowed, but his judgement ripe;
And in a word, for far behind his worth
Comes all the praises that I now bestow,
He is complete in feature and in mind,
With all good grace to grace a gentleman.

    — Valentine, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-4

    [ACTING TIPS]

Valentine is talking to Sylvia about his best friend Proteus who has just arrived at Milan.  His excitement is the key of the coming action (that Sylvia falls in love with Proteus).

  • What, Gone Without A Word?

    What, Gone Without A Word?

    🎭 Julia, farewell.
                                 What, gone without a word?
Ay so true love should do: it cannot speak,
For truth hath better deeds than words to grace it.

    — Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-2

    [ACTING TIPS]

Proteus feels a bit of frustration when he finds Julia has gone before he leaves.  He probably wants her to see him off.  We all know that “left unattended” feeling, don’t we?  And think up any reasonable cause which suit him.

  • A Thousand Good-Morrows [Shakespeare For You]

A Thousand Good-Morrows [Shakespeare For You]

    🎭 Madam and mistress, a thousand good-morrows.

    — Valentine, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-1

    [ACTING TIPS]

This phrase reminds me of Juliet’s saying “A thousand times good night”.

Valentine is so nervous in front of Sylvia, and says “Madam and mistress” to her.

Take very low status.  Put very high status on her.

  • If You Love Her, You Cannot See Her [Shakespeare For You]

If You Love Her, You Cannot See Her [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 Speed:  If you love her, you cannot see her.
    Valentine:  Why?
    Speed:  Because Love is blind.

    — Speed & Valentine, Two Gentlemen of Verona 2-1

    [ACTING TIPS]

Enjoy Speed.  You can actually do whatever you like.  Just tickle Valentine in the end.  Valentine, don’t assume Speed is joking.  Be serious, and may be a little angry.

The phrase “Love is blind” appears in many of his plays.   It can be said almost all love relationships in his plays get in trouble because of this.

  • Why This It Is [Shakespeare For You]

Why This It Is [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 Why this it is:  my heart accords thereto,
And yet a thousand times it answers ‘No”.

    — Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 1-3

    [ACTING TIPS]

(In the video, I say “Why, this is it.”  Shakespeare says “Why, this it is”. (same meaning)

This is an interesting phrase.  Check the mixed feeling in him, part of it is willing to go, and the other part still saying no.  Be amused.

Or, it seems he is ready to go, but tells us his unwillingness only because he doesn’t want us to see him changeable.

  • The Uncertain Glory of An April Day [Shakespeare For You]

The Uncertain Glory of An April Day [Shakespeare For You]

🎭O, how this spring of love resembleth
The uncertain glory of an April day,
Which now shows all the beauty of the sun,
And by and by a cloud takes all away.

    — Proteus, Two Gentlemen of Verona 1-3

    [ACTING TIPS]

Be dramatic, tragic, poetic.  But all the feelings must be real.  Look at the sky.

  • Fire That’s Closest Kept Burns Most Of All [Shakespeare For You]

Fire That’s Closest Kept Burns Most Of All [Shakespeare For You]

    🎭

Julia:  His little speaking shows his love but small.

Lucetta:  Fire that’s closest kept burns most of all.

    — Julia, Lucetta, Two Gentlemen of Verona 1-2

    [ACTING TIPS]

Julia is in love with Proteus (he), and she needs a proof that he is in love with her too.  Lucetta knows that.

You may act Julia as stubborn, proud, and showing no love toward him.  Julia will speak her true mind that she is madly in love with him as a monologue later, so be brave to hide it.

You may act Lucetta as kind, understanding, nice maid, nursing a stubborn child.

Try many combination.  Their ages may be quite close, like sisters.

  • My Horns Are His Horns [Shakespeare For You]

My Horns Are His Horns [Shakespeare For You]

🎭 Why then, my horns are his horns, whether I wake or sleep.

    — Speed, Two Gentlemen of Verona 1-1

(I said scene 2 in the video; it is scene 1!)

    [ACTING TIPS]

Speed is the servant to Valentine, and a comic character.  This Master/Servant pair is typical for Renaissance Italian comedy (Commedia Dell’arte), and shows Shakespeare is influenced by it.  So, be funny!

You may know the “horn” gag.  When a husband has a horn, it means his wife has betrayed him.  The horn on the head of a man is the proof that this man cannot sexually satisfy his wife.

The servant is the property of the master.  Therefore, the servant’s property is his master’s.

“Whether I wake or sleep” is deprived from the Bible.
