Old Grandma can Walk Now.

Hello everyone, this is ELICA MIWA, the theatrist and founder of Live Interaction Theatre Technique.

Today, I’d like to share a miracle experience with you.

It is a story about an old grandma who couldn’t walk without a stick suddenly became to be able to walk alone!

It is such a heart-moving story, and I will share it with you.

I hope this story will bring some hope and bright future to the ones in the same distress.

This weekend, I went teaching ability of expressions at Tendo city of Yamagata prefecture, Japan, as a part of the region-collage cooperation program of Meiji University.

Since the program targets elderly people, the main age rage was 60 to 70years old.

These people who dare to come join this kind of program are rather energetic and kicking comparing to the norms of their age.

But among them was an old lady of 80s.

She looked very weak, and hardly could stand up.  She needed a stick to walk.

She needed a chair for the support for even deep breathing.

By the way, Live Interaction theatre techniques (LIT) puts emphasis on personal presence.

The first and most important is to come back to your own natural self.

We usually are bound by our daily habits, which are not our natural condition.

Do not mix your “daily natural” and “natural natural”.

If this is complex, think like this.

Your daily condition you think natural is only the consequence of bound habits.  Your real natural condition is the one without habits.

So the Live Interaction work always starts with deep breathing.

It is called Connection Breathing, for it connects you, yourself the inner world, and the outer world.

After that, I give some work on presence a little bit slowly and carefully, which led to walking exercise.

Then I noticed the old lady was walking as normal as the other people.

Then she came to me and said;

“Elica, I couldn’t walk without a stick.  But now I am walking without a stick!

It is raining today, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come this class or not.  But I told myself to be courageous and held my stick.

Then here I am able to walk without the stick.  It’s all because of you, Elica.  I’m so glad to be here.  Thank you very much.”

I was surprised, too!

Did she stumble or feeble in walking?

No.  She was firm.  Very firm in walking.

If you have been to my workshop or lesson, you know how fruitful it is to walk in space; it helps condition one’s presence and nurture the sense of vision and thoughts.

But this time, I was really surprised to see a person who couldn’t walk without a stick became to walk like a normal person within 30minutes.

I guess, the reason was I led the work of Live Interaction quite slowly, I put their mind carefully into fundamentally important places of their body so that the students didn’t get any stress or pressure.

Then the old lady also worked with us in sitting down/standing up exercise, using arms, and using voices, just like anybody in the class.

The class finished with participants’ presentation of a short phrase of Shakespearean words.  The old lady gave it with strong voice, very good articulation, and powerful vibration, without any stress.  It was all so natural.

I was also very glad that she gave the great Shakespearean words heartily.  She didn’t fake her acting.  Again, it was all so natural.

The fact she could walk without a stick all of a sudden probably gave her the confidence, youth, and energy.  I wan deeply moved with her voice which was the fullest among the participants.

Yes, her voice was very feeble and low at the beginning.

Of course, all participants did have great discoveries about themselves, experienced many things, voice a lot, and laughed a lot.

They all loved “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo” and giggled and enjoyed like teenagers!

The coaches of Live Interaction learn how to draw out the participants’ ability and possibility by talking and leading.

I believe the work of directors and leaders is not to make “yes-man” who only act things s/he is told to do, but to make everyone remember that s/he is a born artist, by letting them see and feel her/his own talents and senses.

It is such a wonderful discovery for me that Live Interaction can help physical conditions to be better.

O brave human potential ability!

Now, the work of the day.
