If you, as a director, want to make Shylock a villain, make him a really bad father who hates his own daughter.
Then the audience may understand the theme is not about Jewish discrimination, but about humanity.
Anybody who hates his own daughter could be a ruthless villain and the audience will easily accept him to be punished.
Even so, the audience may still feel “he is punished because he is a villain, and he is a villain because he is a Jew” equation.
Then what about make him a good man?
