Secret History of Shakespeare

Hi, guys and dolls, this is ELICA MIWA.
I want to share you my discovery on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

The setting of Much Ado is Messina, Italy.
And one of the main characters is from Aragon (basically Spain).
I was wondering why Spanish general and other Italian army gathered there, as “coming back from war”.

And I found a real history on the matter!
History is wonderful.
I love history.

Have you heard of Battle of Lepanto, the battle between Ottoman Empire (basically Turkey) and Christian world?
It happened on 7th October, 1571.

The Pope called for Christian nations to form the Holy League against Ottoman Empire, and finally Spain joined.

And, where Holy League first gathered was Messina!
The gathering was in September 1571.

Spanish leader was the younger brother of Philip II, named Don Juan!

Yes, Much Ado’s Spanish leader’s name is Don Pedro (quite close to Philip do you think? well…), and his younger brother’s name is Don John (now, that’s similar).

For Ottoman side was not eager to fight, besides Al Pasha the leader died at the beginning, the battle lasted only 90 minutes.
The Holy League won and lost little lives, as is said in Much Ado.

LEONATO:  How many gentlemen have you lost in this acton?
MESSENGER:  But few of any sort, and none of name.”

After this very battle, the power of Christian nations got very strong in the Mediterranean, which means it was victorious and changed the tide of the history.

In this battle, Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of Man of La Mancha also joined.

Shakesperare was born in 1564, which makes him hear the news of victory of Lepanto when he was seven years old.
That made him write Much Ado.

History is so interesting, when you see the dots and connections.
