Do you see the real meaning of what you say? 言葉の真意が見えていますか?

Hello, from ELICA MIWA,
a theatrist and Live Interaction Inventor.
みなさんこんにちは、
目の前の現実が変わるライブインタラクション®︎発案者、
シアトリスト(シアターのあれこれをやる人)の
三輪えり花です。

I have taught communication in English
at a women’s university in Tokyo, today.
今日は都内の某女子大学で
英語による表現力を教えてきました。

Using usual English conversation text,
you know as such,
an American Tom and a Japanese Ken.
英会話のテキストを使います。
日本人ケンとアメリカ人トムの会話。

I don’t focus on grammar or pronunciation in my class,
but on the feeling of the person
who says it.
でも、文法や発音にはフォーカスせず、
どんな気持ちがそのテキストの中を
流れているのかに注目させます。

Today’s lesson:
Tom says,
今日のレッスン、トムの最初の一言は
「君んち、コンパクトだね」

You house is really compact.

No, what do you think kind of feeling
is underlining in the text?
この下にはどんな心理が流れていると
思いますか?

One minute to think…
・・・考えるタイム1分・・・

Tom was very surprised at
how small Ken’s house is.
And, as a result of the honest reaction,
he was about to utter,
“Hey, your house is really small!”
トム君は、ケンちがあまりに小さいので
びっくりしたんですね。
それで、「君んち、小さいねー」
と言いかけたはずです。
びっくりして、思わず口に出かけた。

But, “really small” is not polite thing to say.
でも、「小さいねー」は失礼ですよね。

So, Tom intentionally chooses words.
He found the right one.
“Compact”
そこでトムは、言葉を選びます。
「コンパクトだね」

Compact is a nice word,
giving the impression of everything is
at hand neatly.
This should not sound rude.
「コンパクト」という単語だと
「この空間によくまとまっていて、
ものにすぐ手が届いて良いね」
という意味が含まれますよね。
それなら、失礼にはあたりません。

But, interesting enough,
Ken’s reply is…
“You might as well think so,
but my house is larger than the average.”
が、面白いことに、ケンの返答は、
「そう見えるのも仕方ないけど、
これでも平均以上の広さなんだぜ」
と答えます。

This means that Ken has sensed
the very first reactionTom wanted to hide.
“Surprisingly small!”
Ken must have felt a little status falling down.
なんと、ケンは、トムが言わなかった
「小さいねー」という瞬時の反応を
読み取ってしまったんですね。
それで、ちょっと、ムッとしたはずです。

You would feel bad, if you are told
your house is small.
So as Ken.
「あなたの家、小さいね」と言われたら、
ムッとしますよね。ケンも同じです。

But Ken understands that the house is
actually small for Tom from USA.
So he agrees with Tom
(You might as well think)
but brings his own status up as
saying I am not below the average.
でも相手にとっては小さいだろう
こともわかる。
だから、相手の意見に賛成しつつ
(「そう見えるのも仕方ないけど」)
自分はそう悪くはない(「平均以上」)
と自分の立場を持ち上げて答えるのです。

You can play with this texted conversation.
Tom can laughed at Ken,
or,
Tom can be very careful not to
hurt Ken’s feeling.
この会話、トムはケンを小馬鹿に
しながら言うこともできますし、
ケンを傷つけないように
「コンパクトでいいねー」感
満載で言うこともできます。

Ken can be angry,
or,
Ken can laughed at his own situation
by making it as a joke,
or even,
can say this with very very low status.
ケンは腹立ちを隠さずに答えてもいいし、
波風立たないように笑いながら
言ってもいいし、恐縮して縮こまって
困ったように言うこともできます。

What kind of relationship
do you want to make?
That will show in
choice of words,
facial expression,
vocal tone,
and atmosphere.
相手とどんな人間関係を築きたいか、
が実際に表に出てくる表現
(言葉・表情・口調・態度)
にはとても重要なのです。

That is live interaction.
それがライブインタラクション。
Behind the words one utters,
or expresses through in any media,
there always flow
psychological meaning.
口に出した言葉、
表に出した言葉の直前には、
必ず、
心理的な意味があります。
Right now, ELICA is rehearsing
Much Ado About Noting
by Shakespeare.
Rehearsal is not just find the superficial meaning,
but to find what psychological battle (small or big)
are going on there.
今リハーサル中の、
シェイクスピア遊び語り第13弾
『空騒ぎ』でも、
言葉の意味の読解はもちろんですが、
心理の応酬を発見するリハーサルをしています。

What if you are angry?
・・・腹立てながら言ってみて。

What if you are confused?
・・・困って言ってみたら?

What if you guard yourself?
・・・自分を庇いながら言ってみて。

The same one line or words can be
said in so many different feelings.
一つの台詞でも、
違う心理で言うことができるのです。

I usually tell my actors.
私はよく言うの。

We have 8 performances.
You may choose different feeling everytime.
8回も公演があるのだから、
毎回、違うチョイスをしてもいいよ、って。
The level and standard of acting is high.
Just, don’t stick with your old choices.
Try different ones, and other actors
will react to you as characters.
演技レベルを変えるのじゃなくて、
演技レベルは高いまま、
違うチョイスをやってみる。
相手役もびっくりして
それに対応しようとしてくる。

Fortunately, my actors are so skilful,
they are good at improvisational reaction
as well.
幸い、うちの俳優たちは、
皆スキルと即興力が高いので、
即座の反応も平気なのです。

Now, just think deeper
what you do in daily conversation.
Find the reason of the choice of the words.
Then, your reality now changes immediately.
私たちが日常でやっている、
言葉の選び方と、
なぜその言葉を選んだのかの心理を、
もう少し具体的に分析してみると、
あなたの目の前の現実がみるみる変わります。
